THE SUCCESS TRAINER

What is a success trainer?

You can say that it depends on the way the club looks at a success trainer.

"A success trainer is a trainer, who can train his team up to win everything and gain fame to the club."
"A success trainer is a trainer, who gets many new players to come and have a good time by playing handball."

I would prefer a trainer, who can combine both qualities.

A Swedish investigation has been made by the psychologist Bertil Björkmann, who used 50 elite football trainers as basis and based his investigation on the result from their subjective evaluations and the place in their tournaments within 2 years time. They were then divided as trainers with success and trainers without success. All were tested on 15 different qualities and a diagram was made, which showed how big percentage of the trainers in each group could be characterized with the different qualities chart.

This was the schedule:

Self-confidence in this test means: "I alone is able!"

Informative means to obtain information and at the same time be able to return the information. There is a great difference between the two types of trainers. The group of successful trainers is very informative and at the same time characterized by not being especially worried.

The cause to this could be that they have both delegated the things and have control with the things at the same time. They are also characterized to be very co-operative and group oriented in their trainer work and in fact not especially minded for competition.

Further the success trainer is characterized by a great curiosity against everything. It means that instead of the attitude: "I alone know!" was open to new ideas and able to sort off the no good stuff and keep the useable. The successful trainer was in fact able to study others conduct and methods and therefore was far from being a lone wolf.

At last it is interesting to see, that the 2 types of trainers was fairly alike regarding acceptance of authority. However the Swedish psychologist had a comment to this. The not so successful trainers understood acceptance of authority as: They had the power - they decided. The successful trainer on the other hand understood acceptance of authority as: To dare believe in others and respect other authorities, for example experts.

Unfortunately a corresponding investigation between an exercise trainer and a youth trainer has not been made, but it could be interesting to see the criteria of success for those.
