CRIMINAL RECORD? |
In Denmark there is a growing demand from the clubs, that coaches
on their schools for ball games must be checked for criminal records, in order that
the children don't risk meeting a person who has been convicted for sexual abuse
against children.
Some clubs are nervous for this arrangement as they are
afraid, that a person, who has told the club, that he or she is willing to be a
coach for a team will retreat, if he/she is told that the job can only be his/hers,
if he/she can produce a clean criminal record regarding abuse of children. Some
clubs also fear, that if they suddenly demand a criminal record from a. permanently
employed coach the person will feel himself under suspicion: "I have never done
anything wrong. Why does the club now want a record?"
But the consideration to the
children ought to be more important. No one should have the possibility to be a
trainer for kids 3 years after they have committed an offence against a child. Of
course the control cannot cover the children against new offenders, but you can
stop the person's, who has been convicted and prevent such persons to be a trainer
for the youth.
Therefore I can only say, that if you are a trainer
or want to be one, then sign the agreement to be checked. You don't have to worry
unless you have been convicted for the following offences (in Denmark anyway):
- You have had sex with children under 15 years.
- You have bought, sold
or possessed pornographic material with children.
- You have had sex with your
brother or your sister.
- You have affronted a child's decency.
If you
say no to sign the papers, it can only give others the thought that there maybe
is something to hide.
Convicts are normally deleted after a certain amount
of years, but convictions of sexual abuse against children are for lifetime. It
contains charges, withdrawing's and convictions inclusive acquittals. However the
certificate does not contain information about other forms of crimes.
Only the person or the persons, who are mentioned in the certificate of agreement
may see the criminal record, which will be blank if no crime has been registered.
They will be convicted themselves if they give out any information from the certificate.
You know what the police know about you, and if your conscience is clean then
get the certificate and continue or become a trainer.
